“I strongly believe that women leaders will play a transformative role in redefining corporate governance and business ethics in the Middle East”
How has the increase of women in board positions reshaped decision-making processes and strategic planning, especially in the Middle East?
Women often bring fresh perspectives and a heightened emphasis on collaboration, which leads to well-rounded strategies that consider a broader range of stakeholders. Moreover, their participation has been instrumental in driving discussions around sustainability, social responsibility, and long-term value creation, areas traditionally underemphasized. In industries like technology and industrial development, where I operate, having women in leadership has also opened the door to innovation and progressive policies that resonate with the region’s evolving priorities, such as decarbonization, digital transformation, and workforce diversity.
What unique perspectives or skills do you believe women leaders bring to boardrooms?
Women leaders bring unique strengths to boardrooms, including a strong ability to balance risk and reward, emotional intelligence, and a deep understanding of societal dynamics. In the Middle East, where cultural shifts and rapid economic transformation are reshaping industries, these traits are invaluable.
What are the most significant barriers women are still facing in attaining board positions in the Middle East, and how can organizations actively work to overcome these challenges?
The most significant barriers include cultural and industry biases, limited access to leadership networks and opportunities, and a lack of visibility for women candidates with board-level potential. Organizations can address these barriers by:
- Creating transparent pathways: establishing clear criteria and processes for board appointments, ensuring merit-based selection.
- Promoting mentorship and sponsorship: pairing emerging women leaders with seasoned executives who can provide guidance and advocate for their advancement.
- Offering leadership development programs: equipping women with the skills and confidence needed for board-level roles.
- Setting diversity quotas: while sometimes controversial, quotas can be an effective short-term measure to ensure representation and break initial barriers.
How do you envision the role of women leaders in shaping the future of corporate governance and business ethics in the Middle East over the next decade?
Over the next decade, I strongly believe that women leaders will play a transformative role in redefining corporate governance and business ethics in the Middle East. They are uniquely positioned to champion transparency, accountability, and sustainability, aligning corporate practices with global standards while respecting regional values. As the region continues to diversify economically, women leaders will likely drive innovation in key sectors like renewable energy, technology, and education. Their influence will also extend to fostering more inclusive governance models that prioritize ethical decision-making, long-term resilience, and social impact.
